The Perfect Thread With Taps And Dies
Throughout various industries the use of taps and dies are quite common. In general, they are used to thread pieces of metal to create nuts and bolts; the die creating the bolt and the tap creating the nut. Most of the threading is now done by machine, but you still get a select few who use hand tools to perform this kind of task. The applications for this kind of technology are almost endless, and the fact of the matter is that the original skill of creating a nut and bolt combination using hand held taps and dies has been all but lost. There are still a few mechanics and engineers who keep this little known art alive, but for most, the idea has hardly crossed their mind. It is surprising the amount of problems that can be fixed by simply applying the same techniques as a tapping and dieing.
In their simplest form, taps and dies are quite easy to spot. The handheld tap looks much like a drill piece with a ‘T’ shaped handle on the top. Before the advent of technology, this was the main way of producing a locking nut that could be secured onto a threaded bolt. These small tools are often still used to recover old and worn bolts that have snapped off inside of a fixture. A good example of this would be an old engine mount on a car that snaps. The process is quite simple. All that is required is to create a thread inside of the existing bolt and attach another bolt into it. Once this is matched, the corresponding die enables the mechanic to simply turn the old bolt out without having to damage the casing of the engine. This is obviously just one example of the applications that a tap and die can be used for.
Taps and dies come in many different shapes and sizes, but in the end, the same principle applies to each one. There are some simple calculations that can be made to ensure that the tap and die being used are of the corresponding size to one another. In the larger applications, there is an even more complex system that is put in place. A good example of this is the lubricants used to cool the metals that are being tapped. Depending on the material, there is a certain lubricant that must be used. Using the wrong lubricant can result in damage to the tool and the material being worked on. As with any large scale manufacturing, there is proper training that will need to be completed before anyone can operate the machinery. Any good supplier will be able to point a customer in the direction of a qualified trainer to help them with their purchase.
