Vegetable Juicing – Why Bother? by Todd Derstine
“Solid food belongs to them who are mature, of full age.” (Heb 5:14)
By definition, a cancer cell is one that is immature, not fully differentiated, one whose genetics is so mutated that the body’s immune system cannot recognize it as its own. Why then don’t hospitals and doctors take their people with cancer off meat and other high density, hard to digest foods? After all, there are two things that every oncologist should know, and that is that cancer cells feed on protein and sugar. In addition, in the 1950’s Max Gerson, MD was able to demonstrate empirically that nuts and other high-oil, high protein foods not easily broken down and assimilated, can cause a palpable difference in the size of a tumor within a very short period of time. Virtually the only oil that a cancer patient benefits from is flax oil and omega-3 fatty acids. These are indispensable to any anti-cancer regime.
Hippocrates said, “Let your food be your medicine,” but he also said that whatever would prevent disease could also be adapted to cure that same disease. This makes eminent sense, except to an oncologist and radiologist bent on taking all your money. Since the early 1980’s the NIH and the NCI have funded many studies which show that countless anti-oxidants in vegetables and fruits help prevent neoplasmic tumors. Many minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iodine, selenium act as anti-oxidants and create conditions favorable to the reduction of cancer growth. But how does one adapt these preventatives into curatives? The answer is simply, or not so simply, to juice them, as Jack Lalanne would say.
I have known about and implemented in my life the practice of juicing vegetables for over thirty years, to great benefit. What would motivate a young college student in the prime of his physical life to start invest time and money required to juice? I saw and interviewed quite a few- (1) those in my church/college in SoCal, (2) those recuperating at various cancer clinics, especially the Gerson Therapy Center in Tijuana and Santa Maria, Mexico, and (3) read books like Cancer Winner, by Jacquie Davison (whom I also visited and interviewed) and A Time to Heal, by Beatta Bishop of England-various people who had completely turned their prognosis and future around by implementing raw food and juice diets. There was Nelson Doucet, the head of our campus electrical dept, who diligently prepared juices and ate the right foods morning, noon, and night until he overcame an ‘incurable’ liver disease that his doctors had no answer for. There was Nancy Dickenson, the wife of one of our senior pastors in the headquarters church, who cured herself of breast cancer by working the solution in her own kitchen. She is still alive forty years later.
Anyone who has gulped down a half a gallon of juice in a day as I have many, many times, can describe for you the relaxation and sense of complete nourishment that comes over one’s muscles. In bed that night you feel a warmth in your torso that betokens the healing response in your body. I believe that raw juices help activate one’s thyroid gland, which enhances the burning of carbohydrates and may explain the added warmth. I have always used a lot of greens in my juice to lessen the concentration of sugar from the carrots, apples, and other fruits I may use to make the juice more palatable. These greens are the real cleansing agents, being high in magnesium, which is hydrophilic. The attraction for water explains its ability to calm and cleanse the tissues of the body. Search the medical journals and textbooks and see whether allopathic medicine even has a concept of the importance of cleansing from within. There is nothing sadder than to see someone with lots of health insurance hasten their death from cancer by subjecting themselves to the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation, both of which actually cause cancer by wreaking ruin on the liver and immune system. (I saw both by own mother and my mother-in-law endure this pathway) They are ignorant of this one fact: that all of Yahweh’s ways are ways of pleasantness and all his paths are peace (Prov 3:17, shalom is the sense of wholeness resulting from a life well-lived), which no amount of morphine in the end can supply.
Sometimes one does not even need to even juice to have an impact on one’s cancer. I will never forget my friend Mr. Turner in Atlanta whose father was given a 3-6 month prognosis from prostate cancer in his old age who simply acquired, strangely enough, a hankering for collard greens. His son, Mr. Turner, prepared him a large pot of steamed collards every day. This was the only thing they did differently in their life, and his Dad lived another seven years. I believe the calcium and magnesium in the green absorbed a great deal of acidity in the man’s system. Cancer does not thrive at all in an alkaline environment. Juices alkalize. If ‘doctor’ means teacher, then why don’t doctors teach their patients these truths?
I believe in many ways the whole medical system is predicated on a monopolistic profit motive bent on suppressing truth from competing approaches. One approach glorifies man and technology, aiming to steer the ignorant away from foods and methods that will help them regain control over their disease and their life. It is a system built upon what I call ‘respect of persons’ rather than comprehension of the causes of the curse of cancer and other degenerative diseases. The medical profession almost prides itself on saying, “We don’t know what causes this or that disease, especially cancers.” By invariably pointing the finger at genetics, are they not casting the blame at the feet of Yahweh/God who designed us? How is it they are not able to figure out that genetic degeneration follows, not precedes, the suffocation of body systems and cells with pollution, fluoride, steroids, fats, rancid oils, by-products of incompletely digested proteins, and a host of other carcinogenic factors from which the FDA and the AMA have failed to protect us?
Why has all of this befallen us? Why has Yahweh allowed our nation to become dependent on a medical system that does not restore them to health? By failing to educate physicians on true principles of healing, the world’s most prestigious institutions are directly and indirectly responsible for turning us into a sickly nation. It is the fruit of Yahweh’s promise that if we walked contrary to his commandents and ways, that He will visit upon us with burning fevers and inflammatory diseases (any condition ending in -itis), the consumption (cancer, etc.), not to mention his assurance that He would appoint the terror over us. (Lev 26:16) Eventually He would break the pride of our strength and power, both individually and collectively as a nation; our strength would be consumed in vain (Lev 26:20), which is reflected in how our government spends our taxes.
May Yahweh/God help us to get our heads out of the boob tube and into books that can inform us of our sins and of the wisdom that gives life and strength. He who loves sport and diversion ultimately cannot and will not prosper, either monetarily, or in health. That is where millions of American men find themselves today, absorbed with the vanity of passive or active involvement in various sports, and yet having no awareness that their nation has been sold to the highest bidder, and that their taskmasters in the near future will not deal kindly with them. It is time for us to get on our knees and cry out to Yahweh the God of our ancestors, the ones who had no time for the frivolities of movies, TV, sport, and leisure. Yahweh is not going to restore jobs to a people who misspend their time and money, so use your lay-off time wisely to establish some moral and spiritual underpinnings. If you were made to live forever, then what are you doing that is worth endowing you with life into the Age to come?
Yahweh built the world for His Son, which is implied in one Hebrew word, b’nay, which means both ‘he built’ and ‘my son.’ If we cannot learn to maintain our own bodies in a way which eases its own marvelous restorative functions, then it may be too much for us to expect the Son to entrust us with dressing and keeping the earth which His Father intends to tabernacle in once it is restored by the Millennial reign of Yeshua (Rev 21:3).
